Facial Veins Q &A

What causes facial veins?

Visible facial veins are enlarged or broken blood vessels that show up just under the surface of your skin. Facial veins are called spider veins due to their red, web-shaped appearance. Facial veins are a cosmetic problem and don’t have any other symptoms. Facial veins often show up around your nose and cheek area and in the fragile area under your eyes.

Some facial veins can appear more visible when environmental pollutants and irritants damage your skin.

In some instances, facial veins can be a sign of an underlying condition, such as rosacea or an inflammatory skin problem or autoimmune disease. Other factors that might lead to visible facial veins include:

  • Genetics
  • Sun damage
  • Drastic weather and pressure changes
  • Pregnancy
  • Alcohol consumption
  • Injuries that cause bruising

Rosacea is a common skin disease, often related to abnormalities in the facial blood vessels. Rosacea involves a tendency to flush or blush more easily, redness of your skin, and visible facial veins that can appear around your nose, cheeks, forehead, and chin.

Dr. Wieters can help you determine the cause of your visible facial veins and the best way to treat them.

How are facial veins treated?

Dr. Wieters provides the innovative and effective VeinGogh treatment for spider veins that uses unique microburst technology. VeinGogh delivers a tiny and regulated high-frequency current to the blood vessel through a hair-thin probe.

The VeinGogh system involves microbursts of energy that selectively target and heat the blood vessel, coagulating the blood and collapsing the vessel wall, without damaging the outer layers of your skin. The damaged vessel wall is then absorbed by your body.

VeinGogh can safely treat any skin type and there’s no downtime. Most treatments can be completed in as little as a few minutes up to around half an hour. Typically one or two treatments are necessary for best results.
