Spider Veins Q & A

What are spider veins?

Spider veins are small clusters of blue, purple, or red veins that are visible just under your skin and usually appear on the thighs, calves, ankles, nose, cheeks, chin, and forehead.

Spider veins don’t come along with other symptoms. For many people, they can be an aesthetic problem.

What causes spider veins?

A variety of factors can contribute to the development of spider veins, such as:

  • Hormonal fluctuations
  • Pregnancy
  • Genetics
  • Weight fluctuations

If your activities or occupation, e.g., nursing, requires prolonged sitting or standing, these can also increase your risk of getting spider veins.

What are the treatments for spider veins?

Dr. Wieters can help you to decide the best way to treat your spider veins.

Sclerotherapy involves the injection of a special medical solution into the affected vein that causes the vein to collapse and fade over the weeks following your treatment. In some cases, the same vein might need to be injected more than once.

If Dr. Wieters finds that larger or feeder vessels deeper beneath the surface are the source of your spider veins, he might recommend sclerotherapy in conjunction with the VeinGogh™ system.

Sclerotherapy can be performed in the office and doesn’t require anesthesia or downtime. Patients report little to no discomfort with sclerotherapy.

Dr. Wieters also offers the VeinGogh treatment for spider veins that yields impressive results using unique microburst technology. VeinGogh delivers a tiny controlled high-frequency current to the blood vessel through a hair-thin probe.

The VeinGogh system uses microbursts of energy to selectively heat the blood vessel, coagulating the blood and collapsing the vessel wall. The damaged vessel wall is absorbed by your body.

The VeinGogh system effectively targets and eliminates your unwanted visible spider veins without damaging your outer layers of skin. VeinGogh can safely treat any skin type and there’s no downtime. Most treatments can be completed in as little as a few minutes to around half an hour.

What can I expect following my spider vein treatment?

After your spider vein removal treatment, there might be some mild bruising or redness in the treated area that should subside within a few days. You will see continuous improvement over several weeks as the treated vessels are reabsorbed.
